niseko in summer

With stunning Mount Yotei providing a majestic backdrop to lush green valleys, fields of brilliant sunflowers, crisp alpine rivers, thick forests and peaceful lakes, Niseko is a popular destination in the summer months too.

The alpine summer in Hokkaido is an incredible sight as it transforms from winter wonderland to a rich, vibrant green. A bourgeoning schedule of summer activities means there is something for everyone, and Hokkaido’s balmy summer weather and unspoilt nature means the region has become a priority summer holiday destination for mainland Japanese tourists.

Travelling between mainland Japan and Hokkaido is very easy with one of the world's busiest flight routes and an extensive system of underground tunnels for both train and car access. Domestic tourists make up the large majority of summer visitors.

Spring and Autumn are equally beautiful with the blooming sunflowers and kaleidoscope of reds, oranges and gold respectively. Particularly in Summer however, the diverse scenery in and around Niseko offers a huge variety of activities:

Mountain biking

The hills and mountains around Niseko contain an incredibly array of mountain bike tracks for riders of all levels, from gentle cruising tracks for beginners all the way up to highly technical downhill courses for experts. Along the way you will experience spectacular scenery, with untouched forests and wilderness to explore.

Rafting and kayaking

The rivers around Niseko are bustling with activity in summer - rafting offers the perfect chance to cool off in the crystal clear alpine waters as you cruise through incredible natural scenery. Several local rafting companies are Australian-run with years of experience and can put you on the boat of your choice whenever you like.

Hiking

Most of the mountains and forests surrounding Niseko have set courses which are easy to follow with maps and detailed information readily available. Some tracks are quite short while others can be broken into several days.

Many hiking enthusiasts climb majestic Mount Yotei, the Fuki-like volcanic mountain that dominates the scenery for many miles around. Reaching the peak takes around 4 to 5 hours for a reasonably fit hiker, via one of several trails. The reward is unforgettable views and some great photos!

An easier alternative is to climb Mt Annupuri - again there are many different trails to choose from. There is also a Gondola you can take which leaves just a short walk to the peak. A faster descent is to free-wheel from the peak on a mountain bike with your hands on the brake lever all the way down!

Golf

No fewer than 6 superb courses are within an easy 20-minute drive (pun intended). Tours can be organised in the village for either a single golfer, pairs or larger groups. Most of the courses boast breathtaking views and unrivalled scenery combined with first class facilities.

Soccer

Several years ago, local pension owners formed the sakka kyoukai or Soccer Committee to bring soccer teams to Niseko in the summer. Niseko now boasts a custom-built "soccer village" of four fantastic grass pitches nestled into the side of a mountain. Teams from all over Japan come every year for tournaments ranging from elementary kids to adults with soaring Mount Yotei as an incredibly backdrop.

The Kutchan Summer Jazz Festival

The Kutchan Summer Jazz Festival is normally held in late-July and features prominent local and international artists and draws a crowd of thousands from around the world. This annual event is growing more popular every year with its unique blend of Japanese and Australian cultural influences.

Other popular Niseko summer activities include:

  • Horse riding
  • Indoor rock climbing
